The role of technology in China’s healthcare

In Australia, healthcare expenditure makes up a tenth of the total GDP which is double the proportion in China. With a population 60 times greater than Australia’s as well as half the amount of doctors per capita as Australia, China faces serious healthcare problems and sees 20 times the number of cancer cases.

One positive sign is the influx of healthcare technology investment and innovation in China. The AI Medical Innovation System (AIMIS) is just one of Tencent’s technologies. It uses artificial intelligence in conjunction with diagnostic imaging data which can make diagnostics significantly more efficient.

While the number of cancer cases in China continues to grow significantly, there is a good reason to be hopeful as AI diagnostics will help to lower cancer incidence as well as mortality rates over time.
